Frequently Asked Questions | Targeted Grazing
What is targeted grazing, and how does it work?
Targeted grazing is a natural land management practice that uses grazing animals like sheep or goats to control vegetation. The animals are carefully managed to eat specific plants, such as overgrown grass, brush, or invasive weeds, which reduces fuel for wildfires, improves soil health, and supports biodiversity. Temporary fencing and expert supervision ensure the grazing is efficient and safe.
How does targeted grazing help with wildfire prevention and land management?
Targeted grazing reduces wildfire risk by removing dry grasses, brush, and other flammable vegetation that act as fuel for fires. Grazing also helps maintain open landscapes, reduces invasive species, and promotes the growth of healthy native plants. By keeping vegetation under control, grazing protects ecosystems and property while supporting soil and watershed health.
What types of properties do you service, and is there a minimum or maximum acreage requirement?
I work with a wide range of properties, including residential lots, vineyards, agricultural fields, commercial spaces, and public lands. We tend to graze properties less than ten acres, and have the ability to refer you to another grazier for anything larger.
How long does a grazing project typically take, and how do you determine the number of animals needed?
The timeline depends on factors like the size of your property, the density of vegetation, and the type of plants being targeted. On average, projects range from a few days to a few weeks. We assess your land during a consultation to determine the appropriate number of animals and grazing duration to achieve your goals.
Can you work on steep or difficult terrain?
Yes, our animals are well-suited for steep, rocky, or hard-to-access areas where traditional equipment may struggle. Goats, in particular, are excellent at navigating rugged terrain and can effectively graze areas that are otherwise challenging to manage. When it comes to setting up fence, I am experienced with installing electric fence on steep and rugged terrain!
Do you offer free consultations or site visits to assess my grazing needs?
Yes, I provide free consultations or site visits to evaluate your property and discuss your goals. During the assessment, we’ll look at vegetation type, property size, terrain, and any special considerations to recommend the best grazing plan for your needs.
What measures do you take to protect native plants and wildlife?
I use great effort to design grazing plans that prioritize the protection of native plants and wildlife. By controlling the timing, intensity, and duration of grazing, we can prevent overgrazing and allow desirable native plants to thrive. I avoid grazing during sensitive periods, such as nesting or blooming seasons, and use fencing to keep animals out of areas that need extra protection.
How do you ensure the safety and health of your animals while they’re working?
My animals receive excellent care, including access to fresh water, mineral supplements, and proper shelter when needed. They are monitored daily to ensure their health and safety. Temporary fencing protects them from wandering, and we take steps to deter predators, such as using guardian animals or secure fencing when needed.
